In my ongoing project Deception, I'm trying to unfold the underlying harmfulness and everyone’s role as a member of post-truth society by a self-reflective experience. As long as everybody believes in the same fictions, we all obey the same laws and can thereby cooperate effectively. As a species, humans prefer power to truth. False stories have an intrinsic advantage over the truth when it comes to uniting people, but it shatters the foundation of trust in our society.
In this prototype Collapsing World made with Unity, voice is detected by the program and is used as a force to collapse the foundation of the cube pyramid. The eagle in the sky is a symbol of noble lie, an avatar of power watching from above.
The idea of how fictional stories is powerful at uniting large groups reminds me of how bees work together. A community of bees is a powerful system. They believe in the same fiction with loyalty, they obey rules, and work for the same goal endlessly. In the post-truth era, borders blur between truth and lies, honesty and dishonesty, fiction and nonfiction. Deceiving others becomes a challenge, a game, and ultimately a habit. In this prototype Fluid Hive made with Processing, voice is used to generate orange blobs to blur and blend the yellow background. Even when no sound is detected anymore, the background is never going back to pure yellow again.
